Side trip to the Eiffel Tower

Casual Picture of the Eiffel Tower

Our parents always told us not to wonder off on our own in strange cities with people we don’t know.  While in France this was something that I made a point to try to avoid, but I decided to take a side trip to the Eiffel Tower on my own.   It was not difficult to find one of the largest tourist attractions in Paris, it was 2 metro stops and a short walk and the tower was within reach.  My initial feeling about the tower was that it didn’t have the same impact as I hoped it would.  Yes it was beautiful and a magnificent piece of architecture but for me the people I met along the way were more interesting.

On the metro to the Eiffel Tower I met a local Parisian who was interested in why I was in Paris on my own.  I explained that I was here with a group of students from college exploring the culinary culture of France.  The majority of the conversation took place in French surprising me with how easy it was to hold a conversation with a fluent speaker.  It made me realize that I know far more of the language then I thought. As the final stretch of our journey in France,  Paris is turning out to be a new adventure all in itself.
