When we arrived in Nice, I expected culture shock and to feel somewhat out of place amongst the people in France. However the people that I have met so far have been nothing but welcoming and genuinely nice. We arrived late evening Thursday and checked into our hostel. It wasn't too terribly exciting being that we were all exhausted from our journey but the adventure was till to come.
Friday January 11th we awoke for a group meeting and then took a walking tour of old town Nice. It is hard to compare old Nice to anything we have state side. the small roads and tiny shops show a life most of us have never lived. The hustle and bustle of our average day seems so out of place here, instead of loud busy streets Nice is tranquil, the French and even other tourist seem to enjoy the quiet. For me the difference was amazing, I am so used to traveling to New York city that Old town Nice was pleasant surprise. Speaking with other travelers here it was plain to see that we Americans were out of place. We were standing outside talking to a member of the hostel staff and a group of other travelers when he informed us of how Americans are much louder than Europeans, it was shocking to take notice of this. But I digress, Nice has a lot to offer. The flower and fruit markets were one of my favorite parts of the tour. The fruit and the flowers had so much more color than any thing I had ever seen, and the flavor of the food far surpassed many of the fruits I have tried in the states. But I must admit the best part was the view of the Mediterranean.
A group of us took the time to explore the area around our hostel and located a cafe where we enjoyed espressos and cafe au lait while sitting outside enjoying the day and watching the people around us. We also took the time to explore a clothing shop close to our hostel. The night life in Nice is loads if fun. Nice is truly a beautiful city with many different places to go and many different people to meet.
